Course Description:  3 credits in sociology. A study of the family and population dynamics. Issues of fertility to include teenage pregnancy, the timing of parenthood, and the determinants and consequences of family size are discussed as they relate to the family behavior issues of marital patterns, the use of child-care options, and the relationship between work and family. Issues of policy as related to demographic changes in the family are also considered.

In addition to class participation, a midterm and a final exam, a 6-8 page term paper or report will be due not later than the sixth week.

Other Information:    You should come prepared for each class meeting by reading the appropriate assignments and reviewing class notes from the previous meeting. 

Class participation points come from discussing chapters, lectures, or opinions in a constructive manner. Everyone should feel free to speak up, but the frequency of speaking up will not be the only part of class participation. The quality of participation counts as much as participating itself.

Project Descriptions:   Weekly contributions or assignments will cover topics and ideas focusing on the various aspects of the SOCY 312.  It is expected that students will do weekly research, using sources outside of the textbooks, including internet sources, news sources, interviews, books, and articles.
