Is math 103 for you?

Math 103 is a college mathematics course, not a college algebra course. It many cases, it will fulfill your GER in math and serve as a prerequisite for stat 200, but it unlikely to fulfill the math requirement for technical courses. If you degree requires you to take more math or math-based classes, please make sure math 103 is the course you need in the long term.

Prerequisites

The functional prerequisite for math 103 is math 012. If you enter math 103 without a recent algebra class, you are implicitly entering an agreement that you will undertake any additional work necessary to overcome knowledge deficiencies. UMUC will assist you both with face-to-face and on-line math labs (as well as face-to-face tuition on how to use the online resources) but be aware that the responsibility for finding the time and commitment to make use of these resources, as well as the additional studying that this will require, is yours alone.

Schedule

The up-to-date schedule is available online. The schedule will be subject to change and changes will be reflected in the online schedule. I will detail any changes that are made.

Homework/projects

There are assigned homework problems for each chapter covered. These problems are listed online. You are responsible for submitting correct and fully explained solutions to each of the assigned problems at the first class meeting of the week after the chapter is covered in class. The answers to all assigned questions can be found in the textbook’s solution key: if you have problems arriving at a coherent method for arriving at the solution, please attend either the mathlab in person or on-line.

The homework will not be graded in detail, but questions similar to those assigned on the homework will make up the quizzes and tests.

Please treat the assigned problems as the minimum you should be doing. Math is really not a spectator sport – the more problems you do, the more comfortable you will feel and the better your tests results will be.

Tests

In addition to the comprehensive final exam, there are six quizzes and tests on this course.

Quizzes last fifteen minutes and contain five questions. Tests last one hour and contain no more than twenty questions. All questions will resemble those found in the assigned list of homework problems. You can use calculators on all exams. All exams are closed book/no notes but necessary formulas will be provided.
